scotties in the doctors

so the XT front derailluer arrived but i just couldn't really put it on successfully. its hard to work under the stairs at home with no stand and seriously bad lighting. i did install it but have dropped him off at blackmans to have it adjusted properly.
speaking of blackmans i had a chat to them and it is looking like it may be the go to redesign their site and a contra for a bike is the plan. maybe this bike???

the puch sold so i brought 3 gels and set of leg warmers. probably should have used the money to get a full tilt service on scottie but he's going to have to wait.

452 !

452 !, originally uploaded by ukalipt.

i raced. i took scottie down to yellomundee and raced. it was unreal. i had such a good time. the night befores sleep was great which i think always helps. scottie was in 95% condition and i wasn't because i hadn't had a ride all week. as it turns out i did really well but i am not happy with my results - if that makes any sense.

for the first time every scottie let me down. i hate to blame the bike but he really didn't do me any favours on the day. going down the hill to the track i had a solid plan of attack for the race and i think it would have worked perfectly if scottie handn't let me down. [still love him though].  i know i could probably move up to C class already but i was pressed for time as we were going on holidays after the race and we had a 3.5hr drive ahead of us so 2 laps would leave just enough time.

my plan was to attack the race early, then sit with whom ever was out in the front and see how i could pace myself against them [from the D class i entered]. in total there were 18 riders in D class. we started last which i was quiet happy with. i took off from mid to back of the pack and pretty much sat back for the first .5-1km. from memory i overtook 2 guys in that first section. as soon as we hit a hill i overtook almost all of D class. it was a bit hard to tell but i think i was in either 1st to 3rd by about the 1.75km mark. problem was i didn't know the track and i actually took a wrong turn. only to have 4-5 guys pass me as i u-turned to get back on the right path. not long after that mistake i over took 2 or 3 of the guys who had just passed me and thats when scottie let go...

i don't really know exactly what happened but it seemed as though i had gone over a bump or log/rock of some description and the chain came off. the whole drive chain stopped so i had to pull over. again a few guys over took me as i was putting the chain back on. once on i tried to start pedaling again but the pedals half turned then seized... i was quiet disorientated at this point not really understanding what was going on with the bike and i was more concerned about the leaders getting away from me. i had to stop and focus on the mechanic problem i was experiencing... the front derailluer was basically fucked and bent so badly it was hitting the crank arm and not allow it to turn. i bent it back quickly and took off. the noise was really bad from the chain rubbing on the front derailluer so i stopped again to sort it out. by this time my race was pretty much over with only one guy behind me.

i realised i could no longer fix the issue and would just either have to pull out or ride scottie in the state he was in... so the later was the only choice. after about another 2km i also had come to the realisation i no longer had the middle or smaller chainring on the front cogs - which wasn't good. i had tried twice to gear down but nothing was right at the front so i just forced the chain back onto the top ring and left it there for the remainder of the race. on the second lap i did also have to stop and have a leak, so 20+ seconds was consumed doing that as well.

it was difficult to go up hills and now realise i had started a little to hard. not having raced before that kind of distance i think i will in future not go out as hard, more just keep up with the frontish pack and slowly peck away at them.

in all i did achieve what i set out to do. finish in the top half of D class, coming in a respectable 8th out of 18 starters [15 finished with 3 DNF's in D class].

my times were

lap 1: 34:40 - lap 2: 33:50

the guy that came 4th's times were 33:07 - 33:36 | so with those times i could have been in 4th place.

overall i am happy.. and i have just purchased this on ebay.

next stop, dirtworks in two weeks

work deck

work deck, originally uploaded by ukalipt.

preparing scottie for the RND 2 XC - meeting at yellomundee tomorrow. not a lot needed to be done, tires swapped from the slicks i road to the city on, smallish front derailuer adjustment, removing lights etc.

rock n roll'd the chain, and placed 3bar - 42ish PSI in the tires. i will start in D class and i am hoping to finish in the top half of the pack - i would be ecstatic to be in the top 10 but "tell him he's dreaming" is on faint voice in the back of my mind.

NOS presta on for good luck

61km+ oaks sun valley home - poor collar

jason, nick and i did a nice ride today. oaks fire trail then on to the blaxland bake house of coffee [OJ for me - god i hate coffee]. nick then left and caught the train whilst jason and i continued along, through sun valley, along to yellow rock and back home. i think nick thoroughly enjoyed the ride. jason also had his first run on the cross+marks - we are both sold on them. they were the shit through all terrain!

in total it was a 61km ride of all types of terrain. sadly we spoke briefly to a guy on the fire trail who was laying down waiting for an ambulance to come - he had just come off and broken his collar bone. he explained the chain had locked up. then the back wheel locked up and he lost control. it was on the hardest downhill part of the fire trail as well as the fastest rough part. get well.

after 50+ km and a painful last full climb, i came over a hill exhausted only to see this... totally pissed myself laughing

here's the route for today
[add the first 10km to the station from home]

as a last note: after riding along the sun valley section both jason and i were thinking/saying exactly the same thing. fuck we live in the best part of the world.

training mode - xt derailer - cross+marks

so that is it, complete training mode.
light work out over the weekend but focussing more on strength right now. jason and i did a short ride but fucken bee's nest hill, its a killer. jason couldn't make it up it, although his effort is just quiet amazing. i didn't really get that close at all. strength IS the focus. this weeks station runs will be hard paced to gets some build up for the dirtworks 50km. i could easily do the dirtworks, but i want to try and do it in a very reasonable time.

i have placed the xt derailer on scottie but i have to get it "professionally" tuned. i don't really know how to so i would rather it done correctly. it looks shit in the pic above but after a good clean up it is in great condition. couple of scratches but nothing to bad. i did have to get find a replacement top pulley wheel bolt, as the thread was stripped, but for $20 i am stoked. the replacement bolt was thrown in free from blackmans when i bought the cross+mark tires

scottie will venture with me tomorrow to the city for his service. i'm hoping to organise brad to do the oak's fire trail with me over easter.

Penrith lock-ups

Penrith lock-ups, originally uploaded by ukalipt.

this freaked me out. i was returning to the car after a "financial meeting" in penrith when i saw these bike lockers. i never knew they existed anywhere let alone in penrith. i would love to see them in the blue mnts then i could ride any of my bikes to the station without the worry of bad men helping themselves to my property.

holy crap. there are some in springwood. i am going on a search to find them. i could ride scottie to the station every day.

Grose point ride

i am an idiot. i rode for just under 50km yesterday in the 40ยบ heat. i left at 10am and returned home at 1.00pm. 3 hours of heat hell. the ride was average but the view at the destination point was quiet spectaular, although the river below was a real tease. i so just wanted to jump in it. the ride was from trailflix's grose point trail. once i reached the lookout i took out my phone to take a few images, then realised i had reception, which blew me away, what was even cooler was i had a missed call. it was from blackmans, tarini was ready to be picked up.
mapping position is maked on the flickr image below.

grose point
and thanks to track cunt for the inspiration - i now have the route mapped out at mapmyrun.

it took my total km's for the week to a nice 130.

100km dirtworks - tarini update

nick from work just spoke to me and i am really keen to do the dirt works 100km ride this year. camp the night ride all day... then die/sleep all day sunday. sounds like my type of weekend!

karen and the boys just called to say they have picked up all the tarini upgrades. pretty exciting weekend ahead. i also went the full fixie last night and removed the front brake, and returned to 46/16 = 77.62 GR.

i am going to do the grose point ride this weekend rather than blue gum swamp. looking to set out early sunday morning to be back early to beat the heat.

Seen in Sydney pt3
I'm 90% sure she has returned home yesterday! thank good i feel much better about it all now.

I have now downsize my commuter pack to the torpedo 7 hydration pack i picked up a while back for $25. tis much better for commuting between the house and the silver ghost pickup point. the blackwolf 30 was just too big.
